I was always made to believe that painting over stained surfaces was a job not meant for the do-it-yourselfer. With some easy-to-implement tips I learned the process is actually quick, simple, and because of the dramatic upgrade painting cabinets makes to a room, VERY REWARDING.
TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT YOU WILL NEED:
- Paint - Color in Photo ALLEN & ROTH BELLTOWER STONE
- Primer or Kilz
- Sandpaper
- Paint Brush and/or Small Roller
- Knobs/Handles - to add or change hardware
STEP 1: REMOVE FUNCTIONING DOORS AND DRAWERS
STEP 2: WIPE DOWN ALL SURFACES TO BE PAINTED
STEP 2: WIPE DOWN ALL SURFACES TO BE PAINTED
Your just trying to prep the cabinetry by removing dust and grime that is sitting on the surface. A quick "once over" with a damp wash cloth is all it takes.
STEP 3: SAND ALL SURFACES TO BE PAINTED
Again, nothing back-breaking or meticulous. One or two squares of sandpaper did the job for my cabinets. A quick "once over" to roughin' up the surfaces is all that is necessary.
(Wipe off surfaces again post sanding with damp wash cloth or better yet cloth dampened with paint thinner.)
STEP 4: PRIME ALL SURFACES TO BE PAINTED
I had the Home Depot "paint expert" mix in a little grey color into my Kilz/primer because grey was the main hue in my paint color. It made for easy, flawless coverage.
STEP 5: IF ADDING HARDWARE, DRILL HOLES
STEP 5: IF ADDING HARDWARE, DRILL HOLES
Remember to consider your hardware. Not all knobs/handles are a one hole, in the middle install.
STEP 6: PAINT ALL SURFACES
STEP 7: REATTACH DOORS AND DRAWERS
STEP 8: INSTALL HARDWARE
